Primary education takes six years after the pre-school education. Children usually start primary education at the age of seven and ends at twelve. In addition to reading, writing and arithmetic, children will be exposed to other subjects such as science, physical education, Islamic and moral education. At the end of their studies in Year 6, they will sit for the Primary School Achievement Test or Ujian Peperiksaan Sekolah Rendah (UPSR). The subjects taken in this exam include:
  • Bahasa Melayu
  • Bahasa Inggeris (English)
  • Science
  • Mathematics
In this exam, students will be tested on:
  • Mastery of comprehension, writing and oral for Malay and English
  • Mastery of mathematical skills
  • Mastery of science concepts

Subjects for Primary


Bahasa Melayu

Bahasa Melayu consists of two papers; Bahasa Melayu Pemahaman (Malay Comprehension) and Bahasa Melayu Penulisan (Malay Writing). Bahasa Melayu Pemahaman consists of 40 objective questions and candidates are given 50 minutes to answer the questions. The questions are based on the given passage. Whereas, Bahasa Melayu Penulisan consists of three sections (A, B, C) and candidates are given 1 hour and 15 minutes to answer the three sections.

Bahasa Inggeris

English consists of two papers; English Paper 1 and English Paper 2. Paper 1 consists of 5 sections which has 40 questions. Students will be tested on the vocabulary, social expressions, grammar, grammar text completion and comprehension. The candidates are given 50 minutes to answer this paper. However, English Paper 2 is the writing paper which consists of three sections and the candidates are given 1 hour and 15 minutes to answer the question.

Science

The Science paper lasts for 1 hour and 15 minutes and it is divided into two sections; Section A and Section B. Section A consists of 30 multiple choice questions whereas for Section B is the subjective questions. Usually there are three to four questions in subjective papers and it will be four to five sub-questions based on the given experiment diagram.

Matematik

The mathematics papers are divided into two papers, Mathematics Paper 1 and Mathematics Paper 2. The time given to complete this papers are 1 hour 40 minutes, 1 hour for Mathematics Paper 1 and 40 minutes for Mathematics Paper 2. Paper 1 consists of 40 multiple choice questions and Paper 2 is the subjective area of Mathematics which consists of 20 question. The frequently asked question in the Mathematic papers are addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, digit numbers, fractions, money, area and volume and etc.
